REQUIREMENTS FOR ONLINE APPLICATION OF ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP

According to Law 91 of 15 of 1992, Art. 5 and the Law n. 94 of 15/07/2009, a foreigner married to an Italian Citizen and who wishes to acquire Italian Citizenship, may apply at the Consular Office of this Embassy.
Applications may be initiated after 3 years of marriage or 18 months if there are minor children. It is important that the Italian spouse be registered as an Italian living abroad (AIRE) with the Italian Embassy.
Applications may not be submitted if the spouses are divorced or separated and may only be submitted if the marriage has been registered at the Municipality in Italy and confirmation has been received by this Embassy.

Documents required for the application are the following:

1. MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE – Issued by the Municipality in Italy;
2. UNABRIDGED BIRTH CERTIFICATE, translated and apostilled;
3. POLICE CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE, translated and apostilled, from each country in which the applicant has resided since the age of 14. (N.B. for women the MAIDEN SURNAME must also appear on the Police Clearance Certificate).

South African Police Clearance Certificates are obtainable from the South African Police Service Local Criminal Record Centre in Schoeman Street 271, Pretoria, Tel: 012 3933633.

The Apostille is obtainable from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) at 460 Soutpansberg Road, Rietondale, Pretoria;

4. PROOF OF PAYMENT OF EURO 200 issued by the bank. International bank transfer to The Italian Ministry of Internal Affairs as follows.

5. COPY OF PASSPORT

Birth Certificates and Police Clearance Certificates to be translated by a sworn translator (see Note 1 below) and Apostilled.

N.B.: - The Apostille must be affixed on all Certificates and all translations.

PROCEDURE:

Applicants must register online at: https://cittadinanza.dlci.interno.it and insert:
- SURNAME as it appears on the birth certificate (maiden surname for women)
- NAMES
- DATE OF BIRTH (dd-mm-yy)
In the event of errors made during the registration online, it is necessary to cancel the registration on the main webpage by using the function “cancella la registrazione al portale” and restart a new registration.

Once registered, go back to the webpage with your registered details and select FUNZIONE 1 “GESTIONE DOMANDA”. Then select MODELLO AE – foreign citizen resident abroad, Art. 5.
Complete all the required information and attach the following documents:

1- Birth Certificate, translation and Apostille;
2- Police Clearance Certificate(s), translations and Apostilles;
3- Marriage Certificate issued by the Municipality in Italy;
4- Proof of Payment of Euro 200;
5- Copy of passport.

During this process it is possible to save, modify, cancel or send the completed application.
Once the application has been sent, a summary document together with a sent receipt and an Identification number will be generated. Please print these but do not sign.

The Consular office will receive a notice of your application online after which you will be contacted to set up an appointment in order to verify the application and for the authentication of your signature on the printed application form.

Please bring all the required documents in original at your appointment.
