The Consular network
Currently the Italian diplomatic-consular network in South Africa is subdivided into areas of territorial jurisdiction in which the Consular Section in the Embassy is competent for the metropolitan area of Pretoria, and the Italian citizens residing in countries of secondary diplomatic accreditation such as Mauritius, Lesotho, Madagascar and Namibia. The Consulate General of Italy in Johannesburg is competent for Gauteng Province (excluding Pretoria), the Free State, North-West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. The Consulate of Italy in Cape Town is competent for the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape. The Honorary consular agencies of East London and Port Elizabeth, both falling under the jurisdiction of the Consulate of Italy in Cape Town, are part of the network as is the Honorary Consulate of Italy in Port Louis (Mauritius) which falls under the jurisdiction of the Embassy of Italy in Pretoria which is competent for all countries of secondary accreditation assigned to it.
Following the closure of the Honorary Consulate General of Italy in Antananarivo (Madagascar), a country for which the Embassy of Italy in Pretoria has always been competent, visas are to be issued by the Consulate General of France, while assistance to Italian nationals is guaranteed by the diplomatic representatives of the European Union that are present in that country (France, Germany, Denmark).
